European Union

(August 2014) July saw the Eurozone Manufacturing PMI hold steady at June’s seven-month low of 51.8, as the ongoing expansions in Germany and outside of the big-two economies were partly offset by a deeper downturn at French manufacturers.
(August 2014) In many EU countries, staying in a hotel and eating out in a restaurant are far more expensive than in Germany according to Destatis, the federal statistics office.
(August 2014) Eurozone economic growth accelerated at the start of the third quarter. The final Markit Eurozone PMI (purchasing managers index) Composite Output Index rose to a three-month high of 53.8 in July, up from 52.8 in June, but a shade lower than the earlier flash estimate of 54.0. The combined output of the Eurozone manufacturing and services sectors has now risen for 13 successive months. The latest rate of expansion was the second-strongest in over three years, bettered only during this sequence by April’s high.
(September 2014) Eurozone services business activity rose for the thirteenth successive month in August, according to a PMI (purchasing managers' index) survey today. The Eurozone Services Business Activity Index posted 53.1, down slightly from July’s 38-month high of 54.2 and below the flash estimate of 53.5.
(June 2011) On the back of the stronger-than-expected growth outturn in Q1 2001, European-based economists at Morgan Stanley, the US investment bank, this week revised up their full-year real (inflation adjusted) GDP (gross domestic product) forecasts for the Eurozone.
(June 2011) Greece is set to impose new austerity measures of about €6.4bn in tax rises and spending cuts including sacking public sector workers, together with a privatisation plan targeted to raise €50bn, in return for a second bailout to avoid defaulting on its debt.
(June 2011) About 71% of exports of goods “made in Germany” were shipped to European countries. 60% of all goods were delivered to the member states of the European Union. The second important sales market for German goods in 2010 was Asia with a share of about 15%, followed by America, with a share of approximately 10%. Africa and Australia / Oceania only accounted for small%ages of German exports (2% and 1%, respectively).
