US

US

(October 2013) 2013 has become a key year in the energy industry: the US has overtaken Russia and Saudi Arabia in the production of crude oil and natural gas while China has overtaken the US as the world's biggest importer of oil.
(September 2013) Two new studies recently published in the United States argue in favour of policies both to encourage greater freedom of foreign investment into the United States, and to reduce threats to investment overseas by US-based multinational corporations (MNCs).
(September 2013) We reported last month that new US employer business formation in 2011 (excluding one-person operations and self-employment) rose for the first time since 2006 - - the largest percentage increase in nearly a decade. The rate had fallen every year since 2006, amounting to a 30% plunge over that period. Meanwhile, new research looks at the impact of the Great Recession on young small firms compared with previous downturns. These firms are important as they have a big impact in creating and destroying jobs.
(September 2013) On September 15th 2008 Lehman Brothers became the largest bankruptcy in history. In the same year, hundreds of billions were spent on taxpayer bailouts. It marked a global recession that markets are still recovering from today. It was clear that banks needed to change.
(September 2013) The labour force participation rate in the US fell in August to the lowest level since 1978, a development that may reflect the lack of higher-paying jobs in the economy.
(August 2013) Mark Leibovich, the author of "This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral-Plus, Plenty of Valet Parking!-in America's Gilded Capital" examines what has made corruption in America's capital worse.
(August 2013) Reported GDP growth has lagged US job creation during the current recovery, but this unusual discrepancy is unlikely to continue. Meanwhile, US small-business lending has dropped sharply. According to recent figures, the value of commercial and industrial loans of less than $1m - - a figure often used as a proxy for small-business loans - - is now 78% of its 2007 second-quarter levels. In actual numbers, there were 344,000 fewer of these loans at the end of the period, despite the fact that there were 100,000 more small businesses in the United States.
(August 2013) In 2012, 36% of the America's young adults ages 18 to 31 -- the so-called Millennial generation - - were living in their parents’ home. This is the highest share in at least four decades and represents a slow but steady rise over the 32% of their same-aged counterparts who were living at home prior to the Great Recession in 2007 and the 34% doing so when it officially ended in 2009.
(August 2013) New US employer business formation in 2011 (excluding one-person operations and self-employment) rose for the first time since 2006 - - the largest percentage increase in nearly a decade. The rate had fallen every year since 2006, amounting to a 30% plunge over that period.
(July 2013) Four years after the official end of the Great Recession, US economic growth remains lacklustre. But there is more at work here than simply the business cycle: strains in the labour market were apparent long before 2008. Today, labour-force participation is at a 34-year low, and the United States has 2m fewer jobs than it did when the recession began. Weak investment, demographic shifts, and a slowdown in productivity growth are dampening the economy’s trajectory. However, the United States does not have to resign itself to sluggish growth.
