(September 2013) Argentina is the most expensive place to buy an Apple iPad, and the cost is more than double the level in Malaysia, the world’s cheapest place to buy the product. Ireland and the UK are mid-way on the rankings.
(September 2013) European companies raised €1.3bn for 354 deals during Q 2 2013, a 16% rise in the number of deals completed and a 24% rise in capital raised from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, US-based companies raised $7.2bn from 801 venture capital deals in the second quarter, a 2% decrease in capital and a 0.5% decrease in number of deals from the previous quarter.
(August 2013) As the extent of US government surveillance remains a current controversial issue, Facebook has confirmed to users that they are products, making it clear that "things like your name, profile picture and content may be used in connection with ads or commercial content." How many of the estimated 1bn users of the social network know that there is no such thing as a free lunch, is hard to know? It is likely a lot. Facebook is also deliberately deleting information to make more of a big hassle for users to change their privacy settings. The privacy controls are still buried in at least six different menus.
(August 2013) Alfred Ritter heads Germany's second biggest chocolate company, especially known for its Ritter Sport brand. Ritter's company is one of the successful mainly family-run Mittelstand firms.
(August 2013) The majority of countries regardless of GDP are spending in the range of 18-22% of annual output on gross fixed investment but the US is among the lowest at 12% of GDP. Nevertheless, corporate America has record cash troves and buyback of shares are at a record. Cash holding as a % of assets are at all-time highs.
(August 2013) Big Data: Last year IDC predicted that the market for Big Data technology and services will reach $16.9bn by 2015, growing at 40% a year. The research firm's report makes the case that Big Data is moving well beyond the "science project" phase into the commercial mainstream. However, there is a lot of hype and confusion in business on how to mine for opportunities.
(August 2013) S&P 500 companies with full reporting information posted 46.6% of their sales from outside of the United States in 2012, up from the 46.1% reported in 2011, 46.3% reported in 2010, and on par with the 46.6% posted in 2009. The data is derived from the 264 companies within the S&P 500 that have full reporting information.
(August 2013) Slowing growth in China is likely to impact the Japanese corporate recovery that has seen doubled quarterly earnings to records through a weak yen and improved consumer sentiment at home. Fitch ratings said on Wednesday that major Japanese exporters are benefitting at the operating EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) level from the weaker yen but business fundamentals will be more important over the medium term. The Japanese car manufacturers are in a better position than the technology exporters, as reflected in their higher ratings. The average USD/JPY rate of 98.8 was 22% higher in Q1FYE14 (the first quarter of Japan's financial year ending March 2014, or April to June 2013), than the Q3FYE13 average of 81.3, when Shinzo Abe, prime minister, introduced his ultra-loose monetary policy. The yen fell by 13% in Q4FYE13 and by a further 7% during Q1FYE14.
(August 2013) Swissinfo says that Switzerland has transferred nearly CHF900m (€731m; $962m) to the UK and Austria as part of a withholding tax agreement to settle untaxed assets held in Swiss banks.
(August 2013) Siemens, Germany's and Europe's largest engineering group, has fired Peter Löscher, the first outsider to ever run the company, who had been recruited in 2007 when the group was mired in a corruption scandal. Löscher, the Austrian CEO of US drug company Merck, was invited to do some cleaning up at Siemens by Gerhard Cromme and the same chairman has given his recruit a golden boot worth €9m.
