Business Briefs

(November 2012) Cloud computing has transformed the way companies and individuals access their data remotely. But is corporate information safe on the cloud?
(November 2012) Patent Wars: Following the use by Apple without permission of an iconic Swiss railway clock design in its app clock design in iOS 6, the electronics giant's latest version of its operating system, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has confirmed that a settlement of a patent dispute has been made but it declined to confirm that Apple has agreed to a payment of SFr20m ($21.1m). The clock design on iPad and iPhone devices, dating from 1944, is now authorised and whether the design was stolen or wrongly assumed to be without protection, it shows that it's easy to be on either side of the fence in patent disputes.
(November 2012) German authorities have launched nationwide raids on suspected tax evaders in connection with a probe into several hundred Germany-based clients of Switzerland’s biggest bank, UBS. The raids were ordered by state prosecutors in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia.
(November 2012) According to the October 2012 ECB bank lending survey, the net tightening of credit standards by Eurozone banks for loans to enterprises increased in the third quarter of 2012 (15% in net terms, up from 10% in the second quarter of 2012).
(November 2012) International Airlines Group, the combined body of British Airways and Iberia, has announced sweeping changes to its Spanish operation including cutting a fifth of its workforce and and a quarter of its fleet. Lex's Oliver Ralph and Vincent Boland look at whether the changes are likely to help the floundering airline.
(November 2012) The so-called Silicon Roundabout in London's East End is peppered with the internet companies of the moment such as Google, Facebook and Twitter. But, as the FT's enterprise correspondent Jonathan Moules explains, the area is returning to its roots of manufacturing, printing and dressmaking, and these new startups are a hybrid of the old using the global reach of the new.
(October 2012) Consumer demand is spurring retail innovation as smartphones and wider broadband access and coverage, provide unprecedented price transparency, while customer reviews can be accessed with the swipe of a barcode or the tap of a touchscreen. The contemporary shopping trip may not just start on the high street, but during the lunch hour at work, at the bus stop or even in bed. When customers do hit the shops, more than ever they expect to know what is in stock and demand the ability to reserve it, pay for it and go.
(October 2012) New car sales in the US had their best month in more than four years in September, with Toyota Motor showing the biggest rise. Meanwhile, in Italy bicycle sales overtook car sales for the first time in decades in 2011.
(September 2012) This year is the 180th anniversary of the death of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), the renowned German writer, and in his hometown of Frankfurt, now host to two central banks, 'Faust', his most famous creation, is being deployed against modern-day money printing, known as bond-buying. Also in these briefs, we look at the business side of the China-Japan islands' spat and the opposition of François Hollande, French president, to fracking, a procedure used to drill natural gas from shale rock. There are always risks in feeding the demand for energy. France derives over 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy.
(September 2012) Patent Wars in High Tech: Apple is expected to launch the new iPhone 5 in San Francisco today. There has been much speculation on what Tim Cooke, Apple's CEO, will reveal about the new features in the device. Reports say that it will have a larger, 4-inch display, a new dock connector, a faster processor and LTE for faster data speeds. Samsung is reportedly planning to sue Apple should the new smartphone include 4G LTE capability.
