Business Briefs

(January 2013) Going public dampens innovation at high tech firms, according to new US research. An initial public offering (IPO) not only triggers a 'brain drain' but subsequent acquisitions do not impact the innovation trend. However, the potential of an IPO is a crucial factor in attracting early-stage investment.
(January 2013) The phrase "past performance is not an indicator of future outcomes" (or some variation thereof) can be found in the fine print of most mutual fund/ managed funds literature. Yet due to either force of habit or conviction, investors and advisors consider past performance and related metrics to be important factors in fund selection. So does past performance really matter? Very few funds manage to consistently stay at the top. Of the 707 US funds that were in the top quartile as of September 2010, only 10% were still in the top quartile at the end of September 2012.
(December 2012) China opened the world's longest high-speed rail line, connecting Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south in just eight hours. Meanwhile, the Treasury Department says the US is on track to hit the debt ceiling by Monday, setting in motion steps that might buy the government time before it faces a debt crisis.
(December 2012) Happy Christmas and New Year with the help of a video review. Full service will resume on Jan 02, 2012 but we will add content in the meantime. Despite the hype for the gullible, the good news is that the Mayans did not predict the world will end on Friday -- December 21, 2012.
(December 2012) You might think there is nothing new in coffee, but think again. A company in Thailand has developed a unique method for removing the bitterness from the coffee bean with the help of hungry pachyderms.
(December 2012) Transparency International's 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index, released in Berlin this week, highlighted increased corruption in Greece. In light of its economic collapse and looming threat of state bankruptcy, corruption among state officials and members of the government was the highest in all of Europe, according to the report. Ireland slipped 11 places in two years and ranks behind Uruguay and the Bahamas in 25th place.
(November 2012) The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 25th Industry Growth Forum attracted nearly 400 investors, entrepreneurs, scientists and policymakers to Denver, at the end of last month. The two-day forum highlighted clean energy industry technology and business developments. In addition to hearing business case presentations from thirty clean energy companies, including eight Colorado companies, participants participated in a comprehensive agenda of in-depth panel discussions and networking opportunities. More than $4bn has been raised by companies presenting at the Forum since 2003.
(November 2012) Over 10,000 entrepreneur business ideas from all over the world giving opportunities for networking and collaboration! Also advice from Geoffrey Clapp, health technology entrepreneur and advisor to Rock Health, former CTO/COO at Health Hero Network, Inc, director of engineering at Eastman Kodak, Kodak Imagination Works and senior engineer at Apple Computer, Inc.
(November 2012) Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt discusses YouTube and the Internet, and how Google's position on free speech, privacy, and user-generated content resonates globally. On privacy in particular, he points out that, once upon a time, it was easier for teens to get past any mistakes made. Now, he said, “It’s going to follow you for the rest of your life.” Consequently, parents would be advised to go on the offensive: “I’d argue for those of you with teenagers or preteens, you should probably have the online talk before you even have the sex talk with your kid. Because that’s the kind of damage they can do to themselves over their entire life, unknowingly.”
(November 2012) African sovereign debt has quadrupled in the last decade, but compared to other regions still has a long way to go. As Eleanor Whitehead of This is Africa explains to emerging markets assistant editor Rob Minto, investor appetite for African bonds is growing - so which countries are next?
