Business Briefs

(January 2014) World trade and world industrial production for the month of November 2013 rose for the second straight month. The increase in tarde reflects significant rises in import and export momentum in Asian emerging economies and gradual rises in the United States and Central and Eastern Europe. Euro Area trade momentum remained subdued.
(January 2014) The rise of more than 30% by the S&P 500 in 2013 left hedge funds struggling to catch up.
(January 2014) Global initial public offerings (IPOs) rose for the first time in three years in 2013 in both number and value, led by strong growth in developed countries.
(January 2014) Cattle have significant environmental impacts and with demand for beef rising with population and income in coming decades, the areas of the world where beef is mainly produced - - Australia, Brazil, Southern Africa and the United States - - face big ecosystem challenges. To produce a kilo of beef requires 15,400 litres of water - - the same amount required to produce 12 kilos of wheat or 118 kilos of carrots. To make a hamburger requires more than 3.5 square metres of land.
(January 2014) Access to the Internet has greatly expanded and the focus should now be on the willingness and ability of citizens to use it for productive purposes, according to a new report. It is argued taht current strategies for overcoming the digital divide do not necessarily address the underlying gaps such as affordability, usage and relevance of content, with country approaches varying significantly in terms of leadership, funding and technologies.
(January 2014) Amar Bhidé, the author of the book 'A Call for Judgment,' says individual judgment and initiative are essential to the success of the modern capitalist economy. At the same time, rules and centralized systems are needed to bring order and prevent waste. Balancing decentralisation and command-and-control modes of decision making has always been a struggle, and organisations have experience managing the tension.
(December 2013) A study reported in Philip Tetlock’s 2005 book 'Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know?,' showed that the average expert was found to be only slightly more accurate than a dart-throwing chimpanzee. Many experts would have done better if they had made random guesses. Prof Tetlock writes in the Economist's 'The World in 2014' on who's good at forecasts. The Greek poet Archilochus had observed about 2,700 years ago: “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.” Isaiah Berlin in his famous 1953 essay “The Fox and the Hedgehog” contrasted hedgehogs that “relate everything to a single, central vision” with foxes who “pursue many ends connected…if at all, only in some de facto way.” This was an illustration of specialists and generalists at work.
(December 2013) A new report argues that the industrial commodities supercycle isn’t over: continued demand from China (slower, but from a larger base), ongoing global urbanisation, and structural factors such as higher energy and extraction costs will continue to support prices in the medium term.
(November 2013) Luxembourg, Cyprus, the British Virgin Islands and the Seychelles do not meet the international standards on tax transparency, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) published Friday at an international forum in Jakarta. The four countries were said to have sufficiently robust legislation to meet international standards on transparency but they have done too little to put it into practice. Switzerland was one of 14 countries that lagged even further behind because of shortcomings in its laws and regulations. Other countries falling short included Botswana, Brunei, Nauru, Panama, United Arab Emirates, Liberia and Vanuatu.
(November 2013) The Standard & Poor’s GSCI Commodity Index (SPGSCI) plans to raise the weighting of Brent crude, the European benchmark, while trimming that for its U.S. equivalent West Texas Intermediate.
